I have written very little on the subject of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) basically because I’m no expert on the subject and I am still learning it myself. As most of us know backlinks are a huge part of SEO and this is something I have written about in the past: How to increase google page rank with linkbacks
So on this post I’ve decided to go back to SEO basics and do some tips for those of you that are new to SEO.
Pick a Keyword Rich Domain
This is obviously something I didn’t do when buying the domain for this blog! Ideally for this blog the domain should be makemoneyonline.com but its already taken! This tip is only for when your starting a new site or blog really. However you can still have a bash at this by having a keyword rich page on your site example: domain.com/keyword/
Place your keywords in <h1,h2,h3> tags
Your keyword rich title should be in the <h1> tag and any subtitles should be in the <h3> tag. Be careful not to over use your specific keyword as google will pickup on this and could penalize you.
Use Meta Tags e.g Title, Description etc
Out of all the meta tags I think the title tag is of most importance as this is what comes up in the search engine results pages (SERPS) . It is important to have your keyword as the first thing in your meta title.
Use Bold, Italics and underline
Use Bold, Italics and underline on keywords in your content as this gives the words more weight with google. Like everything with SEO do not over do this as it can have a negative effect!
Content is King
I am a firm believer in that if you have good content then traffic will come from the search engines. try to update your site or blog as regular as possible the more good content the better!

For a newbie you have the basics down. Both on and off page factors weigh heavily, so good content along with a link or two always help!

Thanks for your comments Heather. I know these tips are basic but it was something I really wanted to go over as I hadn’t yet done this on my blog.

I have the keyword right in my site name, blog.
But I’m thinking of adding more to the title to bring in a more rounded result. Not sure what route to take with it, though.

I’ve heard that the first section in the title has more weight with google than that the end, or gets lower as you go along the title. So keep this in mind if you do add more to your title. Also thanks for your comment Amy !
