Been checking out the competition for discount code websites today and I am shocked to see some discount code websites promising discount codes for particular merchants and when you click the “reveal discount code + site” button there is no discount code present but still the affiliate link pops up in a separate window. Now these are some of the big players in the discount code industry that are doing this. I have always tried to be fair when issuing discount codes on my site. Only promise a code if a code is there and also provide an expiry date. I know Keiron has the same opinion when he is running his site.

But am I being silly in letting morals takeover when business is business?

One side of me thinks fuck it if others are doing it why shouldn’t I after all I want to make money too! Whilst the other side thinks I’m not a con man I don’t want to promise things I don’t have on my site.

So what does everyone think about this? Should I just go for the money by being a trickster or earn an honest buck?

I started a gaming related website about 2months ago and whilst reading the affiliates4u forum I come across a free tool called affCAFF. Let me give you some info from the post itself:

“tool that feeds sign-up bonuses, promotions and the like direct from operators (casinos, poker rooms, bingo & sportsbooks) into affiliate websites and it’s just gone into Beta.
It’s primary purpose is to help affiliate programs ensure that their latest promos and offers are disseminated quickly and for affiliates it means that they don’t have to keep updating their sites each time a sign-up bonus changes or a new promo comes out.
It’s 100% free for affiliates and there is no backlink requirement.

The system allows affiliates to attach their own affiliate links to each item, choose which properties & promotions (or type) are displayed, define your own layouts and colour schemes etc and then it will ensure your promotions are constantly updated on your site. It also tracks click-throughs so you can view stats and stuff.

Development is ongoing and there are modules coming that feed down images, add geo-targetting capabilities to your websites, allow for centralisation of your affiliate links - actually quite a lot more on the workbench at the moment.

If anyone wants to join in the Beta, there are quite a few webmasters using it, then feel free to take a look at the affCAFF - Affiliate Content System. Lots of info there including examples of sites using it etc.”

So right now I’ve just downloaded and installed it on my server and I think I will be having a play round with it during the next week. It looks like it could save a lot of time when it comes to updating new offers.

One of my sites has been gaining a lot of traffic via Google images for the new popular game Grand Theft Auto IV (hurry up and release for pc imo!). Now on the page which the traffic is going to no google ads were in place just an affiliate link to hmv.com as they had an offer on for some free xbox live points or something when you bought the game.

I was getting a lot of clicks through to hmv to their GTA IV page but I had no sales. So I decided to put some Google ads on the page to get something out of this traffic. Which I monitored and got hardly any clicks but still getting clicks at hmv, so I had the idea that maybe hmv arent paying out on GTA IV because I know some merchants are because they are as the term goes “rip off merchants”. Anyway I emailed buy.at and after a couple of days I got a reply saying they were paying commissions on the game… great however out of 1,116 clicks through to hmv for the game GTA IV not one converted into a sale.

Really I know the reason why this is its just people looking for an image of GTA IV they arent actually looking to buy the game. So whats in it for me and my site… not much I’m afraid just a waste of bandwidth…

So anyone else experienced this or had success with Google image traffic?

Setting up a new wordpress eBay affiliate site today and spent some time setting it up, but the key thing I forgot to do was to what?? Guess……….

Change the Permalink structure! So I’m there getting the different ebay category codes and making the posts then checking each post making sure its the right product I want to get up and I do about 10 pages! Then I realise I have forgot to change the permalinks……. *sigh*! So I tried to change to the %postname% permalink stucture and guess what? 404 error on all the old posts and also on the new posts that I created after the permalink change!

oh goodie! Tried looking round the net on how to fix this but in the end I couldnt be arsed, so I just deleted and started again!

So Marc Eilbeck’s tip when creating a new wordpress based site is to update your permalinks as the first thing you do!

UPDATE: I found the problem with the permalinks was I needed to change the structure to index.php/%postname%/ for some reason it wouldnt take just being /%postname%/

When I first bought the phpBay plugin I thought it would be interesting to test different markets and see what converts the best. I went for large vs smallish price range and UK vs US. As I initially expected but wanted to see anyway the thing that converted best was the smaller price range, as I like to call them impulse buys.

Now for the second test it was UK vs US and I know I didn’t do it correctly due to the fact that the US site was hosted on a UK host but that is something for me to test at a later stage. Both sites were for the same product and were on the same site design, but for some reason the UK site seemed to convert a lot more.

The US site got more click but less commissions were coming in. Now to me this is strange and I cant really explain why this is.. maybe there are a lot more eBay niche stores around in the US and people are getting wise to them? I don’t know thats just a guess!

Has anyone else tried this ? What are you results? Does anyone have an explanation for it ?

According to Wikipedia:

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send “updates” (or “tweets”; text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) to the Twitter website, via short message service (e.g. on a cell phone), instant messaging, or a third-party application such as Twitterrific or Facebook.

I think twitter is great and is going to big like facebook. The best thing I have found about twitter is you can follow your favorite bloggers and ask them questions and they will reply to you pretty quickly almost like IM.

The reason I am writing this post is because I want others to know about this great site and also I want to make more contacts and interact with my readers! You can add me on Twitter here
