I know this has been posted on john chow recently but I wanted to let everyone know about it also and advise that I’ve used it and it works really well! I know when the wordpress update to 2.2 came out I meant to upgrade but never got round to it because it sounded like a lot of work and I didn’t want to mess anything up. Techie Buzz has released a plugin that will upgrade your blog automatically to the latest version of wordpress. This plugin really impressed me all you have to do is download > extract > upload > activate! Then your running the new version of wordpress within like 1 minute or somthing!

Here is what WPAU does;

1. Backs up the files and makes available a link to download it.
2. Backs up the database and makes available a link to download it.
3. Downloads the latest files from http://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzips it.
4. Puts the site in maintenance mode.
5. De-activates all active plugins and remembers it.
6. Upgrades wordpress files.
7. Gives you a link that will open in a new window to upgrade installation.
8. Re-activates the plugins.

The plugin can also can be run in a automated mode where in you do not have to click on any links to go to the next step.

Download it here.

If your a regular reader of Marc Eilbeck .com you will notice I have made some slight changes to the blog and implemented an RSS subscribe button and email field. As some of you know this is my first blog I have done so I wasn’t too sure exactly how to do this. So I’m guessing there will be a few more people like me out there that aren’t too sure either.

First thing to do is make sure your feed is running through feedburner as they have lots of tools for promoting your rss feed.

To get the RSS logo and email box on your side bar…

find an rss logo you want to use (google images)

go to your wordpress admin > presentation > widgets > put a text widget were you want the rss logo and email subscription to go > click the configure icon on the widget > under ‘title’ put Subscribe

in the main text area put this code

<a href=”your feed URL” title=”Subscribe to my feed” rel=”alternate” type=”application/rss+xml”><img src=”your RSS button URL” alt=”rss” style=”border:0″/></a><a href=”your feed URL” title=”Subscribe to my feed” rel=”alternate” type=”application/rss+xml”>Subscribe as a Reader</a>

<br>

Now go to your feedburner account and click the publicize tab and on the left then click email subscriptions then activate the service copy and paste the code they give you after the <br> tag in the text widget.

Thats it! People will now be able to join your feed easily.

Thats not all this post is about as the post title says How to Increase RSS Readers / Subscribers. I have come across a great plugin called ‘What Would Seth Godin Do’ this shows a none intrusive message at the top of the first post on your blog. By default, new visitors to your blog will see a small box above each post containing the words “If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!” After 3 visits the message disappears. You can customize this message, its lifespan, and its location.

If your new here you will see it at the top of this post

you can get this plugin here

GlobalTestMarket is a survey company that pays you to take part in their surveys! The surveys are about movie trailers, new cars, and other consumer products. I’ve been a member of this program for about a month now and I do like this program. They email you when there is a new survey ready for you to participate in which is good because you don’t need to check their site hardly ever. At first when you sign up you have to fill in some information about yourself so they can find what surveys are appropriate for you to fill in. Couple of days later you’re getting emails for surveys.

GTM uses MarketPoints instead of currencies; each MarketPoint is equivalent to 5 U.S. cent. The minimum number of points needed to convert points to cash is 1000 points. On average I would say each survey is worth about 50 marketpoints which is about $2.5. Payment is by check in your local currency which will be mailed to you. This usually takes 4 weeks for US residents and 6 weeks for international members.

I’m still waiting to hit 1000 market points but I haven’t been in the program that long and I missed out on a lot of surveys when I went on holiday.

Ok I’ve finally given in to doing a review for John Chow. When I first started this blog I decided I wouldn’t do a link back for John Chow because his blog is just so massive I didn’t want to help it get any bigger even though I am a big fan of the man and a regular reader of his site. His site is similar to mine in the fact it helps you make money on the internet. He is offering a link back from his blog in exchange for a review of his blog.

It is a good way to get a PR6 link back from a site with a 2,477 alexa ranking. When he links back to your site you can request whatever anchor text you want as long as its not ‘make money online‘, which is a bummer for me because thats the anchor text I am bidding for :D

This blog is based around making money online as you all know but it has occurred to me that some of the readers of this blog may not have a website or blog. I have already looked at how to launch an online business without spending a penny , but in this post I want to give some tips for people who want to start making money online from blogging but don’t know where to start.

1) Get a host - The first thing you need to do when setting up a blog is to find a good host. There are many hosts out there but the main things you should be looking at is things like disk space, bandwidth and PHP/MySQL support. MySQL and PHP support is vital if you are setting up a blog. I can recommend eukhost for a good uk hosting service. There are other free hosting services out there for blogging such as www.blogger.com and www.wordpress.com these are ok if you want to experiment with blogging but if you plan to move on to your own domain later you will need to build up your blog again and any page rank or any other rankings you achieved with your free blog.

2) Choose a domain - the cheapest place I have found to buy domains on the net is godaddy . Choosing a domain that is close or the same as your target keyword is preferable for example for this site the ideal domain name would be makemoneyonline.com but obviously that has been taken

3) Choose your blog platform - www.wordpress.org is the most popular blogging platform but there are others out there such as MoveableType, GreyMatter, b2evolution, textpattern and ExpressionEngin. As this site is my first blog and it is powered by wordpress I can’t say much about the other platforms, but I can say that wordpress does seem to be the most popular throughout the blogging community.

4) Install essential plugins -

akismet this is an anti spam plugin that blocks spammers commenting on your post

adsense-deluxe this plugin allows you to put adsense or any other ads into your posts, this is a must have if you want to make money through your blog.

buy me a beer this a cheeky plugin that asks your readers to pay you a beer through paypal the same as the one at the bottom of this post!

Popularity contest this shows the popularity of each post and therefore shows you what type of posts your readers value most

Kontera wordpress plugin this makes it easy for you to install the kontera ad program on your blog.

Sociable this pluggin puts icons at the bottom of each post that are links to social network sites of your choice, so your readers can vote for that post.

wp-contactform this lets you have a contact page for your blog, the same as my contact page. This makes it easy for your readers to get into touch with you for whatever reason.

There are many other pluggins out there these are just some of the ones I use and have found useful.

5) Pick a theme - Picking theme for your blog isn’t an easy task in my opinion. You can find some free wordpress themes here. When picking a theme think about your choice of colour scheme as certain colours are known for certain things like red is hot/angry and blue is negative/cold.

6 ) Post good content - post good content and do it on a regular basis. When i was on holiday the visitors to this blog went down a lot but as soon as I came back and started posting again the visitor numbers went straight back up. Make your content something you’re interested in because then you wont get bored after writing for a while and you will normally know what you are writing about more.

I was reading ProBlogger today, I very big blog that makes A LOT of money. He suggests that giving some link love to the community is a good thing and also can give value to own blog. So I’ve made a collection of posts that I’ve read through various blogs that I think are informative:

Mr Gary Lee - Last week Gary announced he is giving a away a new apple iPhone which are currently like hot cakes over in the USA. In order to apply for entry you need to write a short blurb on your blog about his blog and his new site. I haven’t personally joined this competition because the iPhone wont work on any of the UK networks so it would be a waste of time me getting it!

Smart Wealthy Rich - Jon is a guy who doesn’t like taking money for reviewing other blogs or companies because he just isn’t into that. I think this guy is 1 in a million bloggers that would turn down cash on the morale he doesn’t like posting reviews on his blog!

Jamie Harrop - Jamie talks about why he started in business and asks the question did your start your business through the love of what you were doing or because you saw the opportunity to make money ?

Matt Huggins - Matt has an excellent post here with Beginner’s Guide to Interpreting Website Traffic Metrics with Google Analytics.

If any of you would like to appear in the next speedlinking which may be in a week or so please comment on this post with your details and I will check your blog for any posts I find interesting.

Due to my recent issues with bidvertiser and the really low payouts per click I’ve received from adsense, I have been on the look out for a new PPC program.

I had never heard of exoclick before I came across a review on john chow’s blog. Basically exoclick a PPC program similar to adsense of bidvertiser, but the difference between exoclick and the others is that you pick the category of which ads to be displayed rather than the content of your site. Categories include: adult, astrology, blogging, car insurance, dating, gambling, health, webmasters and women, to name but a few! you can also enter keywords for the ads.

exoclick also offer an affiliate program which is a lifetime bonus of 5% of the earnings of each webmaster you sign up to the program. Here is an example of one of their ads:

I’m going to use these ads for next few weeks and see if worth using permanently. I’ll write a post in a couple of weeks with an update.

Returning from my holiday on Saturday it came to my attention that bidvertiser had taken £60 ($119) out of my current account and to my knowledge without my authorization. I hadn’t even exceeded the free $20 I got for signing up with them, they just automatically took it out. Obviously I wasn’t too pleased to find with this and as soon as I could I got on the phone to bidvertiser. They advised me they could refund the available balance from my account which all of a sudden had gone down by 6$ overnight.. to $113. I couldn’t be bothered to argue over 6$, so I accepted the refund for $113 (which will take 10 WORKING days to come through!) and they have now changed my account to manual payments only. So this is a warning to all you bidvertiser users! make sure your account is set to manual payments! Ring them and get it sorted out before they dip into your account!
